Youth Mental Health: Early Intervention and Support in Schools

Did you know that half of all mental health disorders begin by the age of 14?! This truly highlights the importance of early intervention in shaping the future mental well-being of young people. Mental health is a crucial component of a person’s ability to thrive in both their personal and social lives, and learning how to cope with life’s challenges early on is key to long-term success and happiness.

At All About Mental Empowerment, we provide mental health workshops in schools, ensuring equal access to mental health education for students who may not otherwise receive it at home. We know that early childhood is a critical period for brain development, and skills and strategies learned during these years can have long-lasting effects on a child’s emotional, social, and academic achievements well into adulthood.

The fact is, everyone has mental health, and everyone faces challenges at some point. Equipping young people with the tools to navigate these challenges is one of the biggest investments we can make in their future.

We’ve seen firsthand how overwhelmed reactive mental health support in schools and at the board level are. The demand for mental health support is increasing, and many students are struggling to get the help they need. This is why we do what we do. As naturopathic doctors, we know the impact that mental health struggles can have on a person’s well-being, and we’re passionate about giving students the skills they need to cope.

Through our workshops, we offer early intervention that helps students develop essential coping strategies. We currently offer four workshops for students:

  • Embracing Your Awesome Self (K-12)

  • Navigating the Online World (Grade 4-12)

  • Coping with Confidence (High School Only)

  • From Worrier to Warrior: Techniques for Overcoming Anxiety (K-12)

But our work doesn’t stop in the classroom. We believe in the importance of parental involvement. To fully grasp and practice these concepts, students need ongoing conversations at home. That’s why each of our workshops comes with a summary for parents as well as 10 questions to help them expand on these topics. We know that when parents and schools work together, we can better support students’ mental well-being.

If you'd like to learn more about our workshops or how we can bring mental health support to your school, get in touch by emailing Dr. Bisleen and Dr. Tara at support@allaboutmentalempowerment.org. Together, we can help students build a foundation for resilience and success.
